Back in September we covered Asus’s N10J, the 10-inch not-a-netbook. As you might recall, this computer runs an Atom processor and resembles a netbook in almost every way, but packs an extra punch: NVIDIA GeForce 9300M GS graphics. I spent a few weeks with it and wanted to lay down some thoughts…A quick look at the specs reveals that the N10J is more or less a pumped-up version of the Eee PC 1000H. It has a 10.2-inch display, Intel’s Atom N270 processor, b/g WiFi, 160GB of storage, 1GB RAM, and Windows XP. The higher end model (currently $799 at NewEgg) moves to a 320GB disk and 2GB RAM. Punjab government ban on the students of private medical colleges to get house jobs and internships in government sectorIslamabad, Jan 20: Owing to the ban imposed on the students of private medical and dental colleges regarding house jobs, the new graduates are finding it difficult to get house jobs and internships in government sector.
The government of Punjab had imposed a ban on the students of private medical colleges, both local and foreign, from acquiring training in the governmental hospitals in the form of house jobs and internships. The decision was followed by protests and demonstrations by the medical students and doctors across the province, last month.
After the announcement of MBBS and BDS results by the University of Health Sciences (UHS) Lahore, hundreds of medical and dentistry students that have graduated from numerous private colleges across Punjab, are unable to get house jobs or even internships in government sector.
"Compared to the private sector, the government sector offers enormous opportunities for professional training due to its broader set-up, massive resources and heavy turnout of patients. Banning private medical students to avail the expertise offered in government sector would deprive them of tremendous learning opportunities," said some newly graduated students.

Most of the colleges those passed the exams were late college students (LCSts)Lahore, Jan 27: The recently declared result of MA English Annual Examination 2008 has exposed disappointing performance of public sector colleges as a meager number of students from these institutions could pass the exam.
A study of result revealed that in most of the colleges those passed the exams were late college students (LCSts), which means they had repeated the exam otherwise, pass percentage overall as well as of individual colleges would have dropped further.
According to result gazette issued by the Punjab University (PU), a total of 110 students had appeared in the MA English Part-I exam from Government MAO College while only 16 could pass out of which five were fresh candidates and 11 LCSts.

The Rhythmic Arts Project was founded in 1997 by Eddie Tuduri (read about Eddie's career here, then read about the origins of TRAP on the About Us page). The Rhythmic Arts Project (TRAP) is an educational program for people with disabilities. Employing drums and percussion, the program teaches and enhances basic life skills such as: maintaining focus, using memory, taking turns, developing leadership, using numbers, using prepositional concepts, following instructions, and modeling. Issues of spatial awareness, fine and gross motor skills, and speech are also addressed. Teaching occurs in an environment that is fun and not threatening so participants develop improved confidence and a more positive self-image.
The project brings together volunteers in concert with administrators, teachers, activity directors and aids at various facilities, and is growing in popularity throughout the world. We will be facilitated in 6 countries and more than 20 states before the year is out. The Rhythmic Arts Project is a non-profit 501(C)(3) company. We honor and celebrate diversity, regardless of disability, religion, race, creed or ethnicity.
What we are not: The Rhythmic Arts Project is not a drum circle facilitation. We do not teach drums or percussion save the ability to integrate our modalities through this medium. December 1, 2008 marked the 20th World AIDS Day. The dire need to respond to HIV and AIDS continues: worldwide the estimated number of people living with HIV is over 33 million; in the U.S., an estimated one million Americans are living with HIV. To mark this occasion, World Education engaged in several awareness-raising activities.
In support of the aids.gov website—which provides information from the U.S. Federal government about HIV & AIDS prevention, testing, treatment, research, and using new media in response to HIV—World Education encouraged colleagues and friends to join aids.gov in four ways to take action for World AIDS Day:

Pakistan: The Power of Family Literacy in Rural Pakistan

Meena Yunus' father died when she was young and her family survived by picking cotton for the local land lord in rural Pakistan. Meena wanted to go to school but her family could not afford it. A sympathetic older brother saved his rupees and finally helped Meena go through primary school, but middle school remained out of reach. Still, Meena pushed herself to read on late into the evening by candlelight. It had never occurred to Meena that there might be a way to further her education and earn an income at the same time. Then in 2004, she learned about World Education's Family Reading Program. They were looking for literate women who could pass along their skills to others. Meena agreed to teach women and girls in her village in a six-month literacy course. "It was so rewarding," Meena says, "I was so excited to share what I have learned with others. Seeing others enjoy this light of literacy makes me happy."
Now 24, Meena is a Family Reading Program mentor to three reading groups near to her home. And her younger sister, Shenila, 14, has followed her example. Shenila has become more seriousness in her studies, and says, "I feel more comfortable expressing my opinions at home and I participate in more conversations in the community. I feel lighter now." Meena has recognized the change in Shenila's attitude, and her sister's confidence has increased.
World Education, with funding from the U.S. Agency for International Development, has worked in concert with six local partner organizations since 2004, and has helped over 100,000 women in some of Pakistan's most isolated areas learn to read, write, and perform basic math. These new skills open up a world of information, learning and vision for girls, women, and families in Pakistan's most traditional Islamic communities.
The Family Reading Program promotes literacy through home-based reading programs supported by local mentors—female volunteers who help women read together out loud. Each mentor also carries a "traveling library" made up of personal biographies and oral histories of the women themselves. One woman created a "book" of stories her illiterate mother shared during her childhood and called it "Stories My Mother Never Read to Me."
World Education extended the Family Reading Program by asking women students to each choose one reading buddy to teach. Shenila picked her 75-year old grandmother (Nani in Urdu). While Nani began to learn quickly, she found that learning to read and write was more difficult than she had thought. But Nani and Shenila worked at it whenever they found time—over morning tea, at lunch, after dinner. Now Nani keeps her books with her wherever she goes. When asked, Nani explains, "I always keep them with me so I can practice." And today, she holds a steady pencil and can write a letter to her granddaughters by herself. She says, "I am given this new gift from Allah. He has prepared my granddaughters to be my teachers."

Other family members are particularly curious about how Nani learned to do this at her age. She tells them, "It is never too late to learn if you are willing to work hard." Like Nani, other participants in the literacy programs have overcome obstacles to learn to read and write; today they are applying their skills and new-found confidence in ways that allow them to function more independently and improve their daily lives. Newly literate women can read medicine labels, pay utility bills and read signs in the local community. Some women from the literacy classes have also formed cooperative groups that have launched micro-enterprise activities that generate income for their families. Women say that they now recognize their own personal worth, and have the confidence to stand up for themselves in public and protest when local merchants try to cheat them at the market.
As a result of literacy awareness, all the adult women in Meena's family have joined the program, including her mother, who has a learning disability. When asked what she will do next, Meena replies, "I want to invite all the illiterate women on our street to join our Family Reading Program… the people can see the positive changes literacy brings to our homes and our families. We are smarter now. We are happier and more confident about our lives."

Taliban restrict women's education in Pakistan

Thousands of young women living in a part of Pakistan once considered the country's most idyllic tourist destination have been prevented from going to school after an order from Taliban forces which have seized control of much of the area.
Fearful of violent attacks that have already seen the torching of over 180 schools in the Swat Valley, school administrators have announced that more than 900 private schools will remain closed until the security situation improves. Government officials, struggling to organise adequate protection, have appealed to schools to extend their winter holidays until at least March. The future education of around 125,000 young women is uncertain as a result of the order, said to come into effect on January 15.
In an echo of Afghanistan under the Taliban, the campaign against female education is the latest phase of a brutal and swift advance across the valley led by local Taliban commander Maulana Fazlullah that has included the beheading of opponents, the closure of barber shops, political assassinations, kidnappings and the destruction of homes belonging to the wealthy.
Earlier this month, militants were believed to be behind attacks on the homes of the Wali of Swat, the benign autocrat who ruled the valley and who has now fled to Islamabad, and Hameedullah Khan, a reporter for the respected Dawn newspaper.
The Taliban have also introduced a parallel legal system where makeshift Sharia courts order lashes and death sentences for those seen to be violating their brand of Islamic law, said Shoukat Saleem, a lawyer.
“Yesterday there was a bombing of a school in Mingora, the main city,” he added. “No one is giving any education. Girls preparing for their matriculation exams in March have had to abandon their education. Unless the government or the Taliban announce that the situation will be ok, no one will take the risk.”
Shoukat Ali Yousafzai, the top civil administrator, said most of the schools were currently closed for winter holidays. “Once they are over, we will give security with the help of the army,” he said.
But in a sign of worsening security in even Mingora, which until recently been beyond the reach of the Taliban, Mr Yousafzai said around 50 corpses had been discovered dumped this month. Some have been found beheaded, others carried a note warning readers not to remove the body before an appointed time.
Ziauddin Yousafzai, a spokesman for the Private Schools Management Association, said: “It will be very difficult to reopen the schools as long as there is no political solution of the problem?The Taliban are now the de facto rulers of Swat.”
The Swat Valley in the North West Frontier Province (NWFP) was once widely known as the Switzerland of Pakistan and famed as a destination for honeymooners and other tourists. In the past 18 months the area has increasingly fallen under militant control. Senior army officers claim their remit remains extensive - particularly during the day - but local people say that more than three-quarters of the valley is effectively outside of government control.
The military says the tactics of Taliban fighters have become increasingly brutal in recent months. The number of troops has been boosted in recent months to counter the militants. Maj General Athar Abbas, a senior army spokesman, said: “In Swat the militants have become very ruthless - there are executions and beheadings. This is the fear and terror they want to create on the part of the public,” he said.
But Muslim Khan, a Taliban spokesman, said they would not allow any girls' schools to operate until the army withdrew from the valley and Sharia Law was imposed. He told the Associated Press: “These schools are being run under a system introduced by the British and promote obscenity and vulgarity in society.”

World universities offer free online education

WASHINGTON: By the end of this year, the contents of all 1,800 courses taught at the world’s leading universities will be available online to anyone, anywhere in the world. Learners will not have to register for classes, everyone will be accepted, and it will be free.According to a report in the Christian Science Monitor, the OpenCourseWare movement, began at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 2002 and has now spread to 120 universities worldwide. Anyone with an Internet connection and a desire to learn can benefit. Intended as an act of “intellectual philanthropy,” OpenCourseWare (OCW) provides free access to course materials such as syllabi, video or audio lectures, notes, homework assignments and illustrations. The MIT site () along with companion sites that translate the material into other languages, now average about 1.4 million visits per month from learners “in every single country on the planet.” According to the CSM report, “The sheer volume and variety of the educational materials being released by MIT and its OCW collaborators is nothing less than stunning … What OCW is not, its supporters agree, is a substitute for attending a university. For one thing, OCW learners aren’t able to receive feedback from a professor - or to discuss the course with fellow students. A college education is ‘really the total package of students interacting with other students, forming networks, interacting with faculty, and that whole environment of being associated with the school,’ says James Yager at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. He oversees the OCW program there. His school of public health now offers nearly 40 of its most popular courses for free via OCW. The school’s goal is to put 90 to 100 of its 200 or so core courses online within the next year or so.”Besides MIT, Tufts, and Johns Hopkins, the OCW consortium () in the United States includes among its members Michigan State, Michigan, Notre Dame, and Utah State. Internationally, members include groups of universities in China, Japan, and Spain. So far MIT has published 1,550 of its courses for OCW and plans to get the rest online by the end of this year. The materials for each course vary. Full videos of lectures, one of the most popular features, are available for only 26 courses, about 1,000 hours of video in all. The programme relies on financial support from foundations, individuals, and MIT itself. The OCW effort is part of a wide range of dynamic educational content emerging on the Internet, says Dan Colman, associate dean and director of Stanford University’s continuing studies programme and host of the website (), which highlights what’s happening in Web-based education, with an emphasis on podcasts. However, lab work, which usually requires close hands-on collaboration between an instructor and students, remains problematic online.

More than 10,000 girls a day will get married before they turn 15.
